Mid-Missouri High School Football Faces COVID-19 Headaches

COLUMBIA – For many mid-Missouri high schools, football is back. Yet, that is without scheduling headaches because of COVID-19.

Due to the COVID-19 protocols that are in place, some schools have been forced to either reschedule, change opponents, or cancel a game entirely.

Closing on week four of the season, the latest schools impacted were two of Columbia’s own. Battle and Hickman High Schools were set to play last week.

Due to a positive COVID-19 test that could have exposed the Battle football program, the game was canceled.

Alex Huck, athletic director of Battle High School, said that it was a tough call he had to make to both the district and Hickman athletic directors.

“By Thursday morning I was on the phone with our district athletic director and since it is in the district, with Mr. Rubenstein over at Hickman. I had to be very transparent, open, and communicative to our situation,” said Huck.

He said that he is glad the case was caught in time, and that is looking forward to this week’s football game on Friday evening against Smith-Cotton High School.
