MU Political Communication Institute: College Students Say Biden Won Debate

Researchers at the University of Missouri’s Political Communication Institute have conducted a study gauging what college students across the country thought of last week’s presidential debate.

In the study of 172 students at 11 universities around the country - 62 percent of college students think Joe Biden won the last debate.

Mitchell McKinney is the director of the University of Missouri’s Political Communication Institute. He says last week’s presidential debate was more traditional and reserved, which played to former Vice President Joe Biden’s strengths and played against President Donald Trump’s previous strategies.

“Trump needed to do something in this debate to throw Biden off, to have us question Biden, really set him back on his heels, and that did not appear to happen.”

63 percent of the study’s participants saw Biden’s performance as either very good, good or somewhat good. While only 43 percent of participants saw Trump’s performance as either very good, good or somewhat good.
