Free to a good home: 78-year-old highway bridge, 578 feet long, needs tender loving care. Contact the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The Highway 40 bridge over Salt Creek and the Katy Trail in Howard County is one of eight that MoDOT is offering up to anyone who wants to take over a piece of state history. The Salt Creek bridge, which solved transportation problems for Missouri during the Great Depression, will be demolished unless someone comes forward to save it.

“We are not selling the bridge; we’re giving it away,” said Karen Daniels, senior historic preservation specialist at MoDOT.

If the department gets an acceptable proposal, the successful applicant can have the bridge at no charge. The bridge can either be preserved in its current location or can be hauled away and relocated.
