Bakari Sellers | Film Awards Season

Segment 1, beginning at 00:36: On whether America will seize this moment in history to progress in race relations after the death of George Floyd, Bakari Sellers reminds us,"We've missed moments like this before."

At age 22 Sellers became the youngest African American elected official in the country when he was voted into South Carolina's House of Representatives. Now an attorney and political commentator for CNN, Bakari Sellers spoke of the need to break the cycle of inherited trauma that many Black people live with.

Segment 2, beginning 27:41: A number of independent films are creating awards buzz with the Golden Globes just around the corner.

It has been a tough year for the movie industry. The coronavirus shut down filming and and postponed release dates. Nevertheless, some films made it into theaters when they reopened while others went to streaming services. The critics looked at five independent films to see which are award worthy: "Nomadland," "Promising Young Woman," "The United States vs. Billie Holiday" and "Sound of Metal."
