Democrat Judy Baker lost the race for Missouri State Treasurer to Republican Eric Schmidt.

Baker is not new to running for political office having served in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2004 to 2008. During this time Baker served on the Healthy Missouri Caucus. She then served as the Health and Human Services regional director of Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska from 2009 to 2011.

Baker had hoped to combine this experience with her experience as a former economics professor to address the causes poverty in Missouri.

“One of those things is always heath care, because health care is one of those things where people are just one health care event away from bankruptcy,” Baker said.

Baker noted that win or lose, she’s happy she was able to meet Missourians across the state on the campaign trail. However, she said she is happy to be back home in Columbia.

“We weren’t able to do a whole lot in Boone because I had spent a lot of time in other places over the last year. In fact I keep telling my friends, you know, come Wednesday I’m going to see you again,” she said.

Baker previously ran unsuccessfully for Missouri’s Ninth Congressional District and Lieutenant Governor.
