Paul Pepper: Andrew Grabau, Heart of Missouri United Way, "Literacy Kits"
'Literacy kits' are on their way to 1st and 2nd graders in high poverty areas (with low ELA MAP scores) because "we know that if kids read 20 minutes a day outside of the classroom that they will achieve higher levels of reading proficiency and higher success in academics." Guest: ANDREW GRABAU, Heart of Missouri United Way executive director September 7, 2021
Paul Pepper: John C. Kelly, Committee for the Negro Leagues Baseball Initiative
Baseball's Negro League is turning 101 in 2021, and The State Historical Society of Missouri is celebrating this now-century(+ 1)-old institution with an online event featuring Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Unfamiliar with the history of the Negro League? Today's guest, JOHN C. KELLY, gives us a nice overview. September 8, 2021
Paul Pepper: Edith Prince and Linda Reed Brown, 2021 CROP Hunger Walk & Yvette Chambers, ParentLink
This year's CROP Hunger Walk returns to its regular in-person experience that was sidelined in 2020. Volunteers EDITH PRINCE and LINDA REED BROWN join us to encourage everyone to sign up as either an individual or a team. Help end hunger 'one step at a time'! Also, YVETTE CHAMBERS introduces us to ParentLink and its mission of connecting families to resources in the community, something they've been doing since 1989! (4:11) September 10, 2021
Paul Pepper: Capital City Productions presents "Disenchanted" & Out of the Darkness Walk 2021
If you're a firm believer in happily-ever-afters, then maybe don't see the musical 'Disenchanted' at Capital City Productions in Jefferson City next weekend. But if you're curious about what happens after your favorite fairy tale heroes ride off into the sunset, this could be your kind of show! (For mature audiences only.) Guests: NATALIE EICKHOFF and JORDYN SCHNIEDERS | Also, BETH HENDREN encourages everyone to register for this year's Out of the Darkness Walk and support AFSP's efforts to prevent suicide. (4:44) September 1, 2021
Paul Pepper: Nadia Navarrete-Tindall, Native Plant Specialist, "Seasonal Berries"
What looks like simple vegetation (on our set today) is actually pokeweed, spicebush, elderberries and more! And if you don't know one thing about any of those, you will in eight short minutes courtesy of Lincoln University's native plant specialist, NADIA NAVARRETE-TINDALL. September 2, 2021
Paul Pepper: Maria Trevor and Terry Overfelt, "Harp and Healing Returns" (Performance)
You're invited to once again take about 45 minutes for yourself on the first Tuesday of each month at Broadway Christian Church in Columbia and enjoy the soothing sounds of MARIA TREVOR's harp. Maria performs for us twice, at: [1:49] and [5:46]. Additional guest: TERRY OVERFELT September 3, 2021
Paul Pepper: Dayna Glanz, OsteoStrong Columbia & Jerry Kiesling, Personalized Counseling of Mid-MO
Members of OsteoStrong go through a series of stretches on a "vibration plate" before taking on the Osteogenic Loading machines during their routine visit. Owner DAYNA GLANZ says doing so stimulates osteoblastic cells, which is a good thing! Also, JERRY KIESLING, MSW, is available to counsel older adults who are going through depression or anxiety, and stressed caregivers who maybe need a moment for themselves but don't know how to get there. (5:07) October 19, 2021
Paul Pepper: Sharon Kinden, Campus Lutheran Church Bazaar & Sarah Howard, DBRL Children's Concert
Talk about bad timing: Campus Lutheran Church in Columbia had just completed an expansion project when the pandemic hit. Guest SHARON KINDEN says born out of that unexpected downtime was the idea for this Saturday's spaghetti dinner and bazaar fundraiser! | The events continue this weekend with a children's concert on Sunday at the Columbia Public Library. Guest SARAH HOWARD recommends that those interested in attending sign-up online! (4:31) October 20, 2021
Paul Pepper: Lois Long, Persons with Dementia Advocate, "World Mental Health Day"
A longtime advocate for persons with dementia, LOIS LONG uses today's visit to talk about the differences between dementia, an "organic brain disease," and mental illness. "Instead of saying, 'I'm losing my mind', be kind to yourself." Lois shares an original poem titled Pansies at [1:30]. October 27, 2021
Paul Pepper: Brittany Whitley, MOST Policy Initiative & Scott Bradley, Carpet One Floor and Home
MOST Policy Initiative's BRITTANY WHITLEY introduces us to LSEN, or Local Science Engagement Network, an outreach arm of MOST that encourages people in the community (that care about science) to establish a dialogue with their local and state lawmakers. Plus, get details on an upcoming virtual event about food deserts. Also, with cold weather on the way, Carpet One Floor and Home's SCOTT BRADLEY shares a high-tech way to keep your feet warm while walking around your house. (4:36) October 28, 2021
