New World Screwworm

Animal rescue leaders say new rules meant to prevent the spread of the livestock parasite make sense. But they are also costly for overcrowded shelters in Texas, which transfer many pets to other states.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture updated requirements for animals coming from areas at risk for New World Screwworms.

Missouri has not yet seen any cases of new world screwworm, but experts say there’s still a lot that Missouri farmers can do to prepare for the possible threat.
