The Missouri Department of Transportation is urging drivers to plan ahead and slow down as Memorial Day weekend kicks off what MoDOT says will be its busiest construction season in history.

Officials point to a record number of work zones across the state, including two major projects impacting mid-Missouri drivers.

MoDOT officials say crashes over Memorial Day weekend remain a serious concern. In 2023, 10 people were killed and more than 80 were seriously injured during the holiday period.

In Columbia, Interstate 70 eastbound between mile markers 137 and 144 — from Route J to Route M — is shifted with narrowed lanes, and the ramps to and from Route J at Exit 137 remain closed. Nearby, U.S. 63 is reduced to one lane in each direction between the Broadway overpass and the Conley Road underpass.

In Jefferson City, U.S. 54 is narrowed to one lane each way from just south of Missouri Boulevard to just south of Stadium Boulevard due to ongoing bridge rehabilitation work.

This year, with more crews on the roads than ever before, drivers are being asked more to slow down, avoid distractions and remain alert — especially in active work zones.
