Officials say the surge in road work aims to modernize key infrastructure — but it may bring longer delays for drivers.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says eastbound drivers could experience delays of up to thirty minutes this weekend. That’s because of construction between paris road and US 63 as part of the Improve I-70 project.

State and local elected officials gathered Thursday in Foristell for the ceremonial start of construction on the section of roadway from Warrenton to Wentzville.

A third lane will be added to eastbound and westbound traffic on the highway statewide, the first section to be expanded is between U.S. 63 in Columbia and U.S. 54 in Kingdom City.

The exact start date for the construction has not been confirmed, but it will go through September.

Crews will commence operations in both directions on sections of I-70 and U.S. 63 on Wednesday.
