Veterans Honored at Downtown Ceremony

The 34th Annual Veterans Day Parade concluded with a ceremony in front of the Boone County Courthouse, featuring retired Master Sgt. Robert E. Borden as a guest speaker.

The Columbia community gathered near the columns on Francis Quadrangle to watch family members march in the parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The American Legion firing party performed a rifle salute at the end of the parade in front of the columns at the courthouse plaza.

This week on KBIA’s arts and culture segment Off the Clock,  KBIA's Jenn Cooper spent time with Mark  Olson, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and MU student, to talk about the veteran writing group he formed. 

Olson encourages student veterans and veterans in the community to express their experiences through writing.

The City of Columbia held its 28th annual Veterans Day parade and ceremony Sunday.  Events started with a parade down Eighth Street from the columns and ended at the Boone County Courthouse.

Patriotic songs were played by the Missouri Military Academy band and the Boone County Fire Protection District Pipes and Drums during both the parade and the ceremony. The parade also included the local ROTC.

Air Force ROTC Cadet Patrick Stark was the emcee for the event at the courthouse. The featured speaker was retired Air Force Colonel Bill Boston.
