Aphonopelma haensi is the docile species of tarantula that lives in Missouri. It can be found from Texas all the way up to the Missouri River, which cuts across the state. Some researchers – like Becky Hansis-O’Neill, a Ph.D. student at the University of Missouri St. Louis who studies the spider – are concerned about the potential of folks poaching the tarantulas to take them home as pets.
