The proposed ordinance is intended to clarify where people downtown are allowed to sleep outdoors, said Nickie Davis, executive director of The District.

Seventy businesses and organizations have co-signed The District's letter asking Columbia leaders to address the city's "urban camping" problem.

The District’s new Block by Block Safety Ambassadors - they're the ones in the bright orange shirts - will provide extra eyes on the streets, deescalate situations, and support bars and businesses. A team of seven will be on duty from 4:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday to help out in the center of the city.
